EXTRACTS

The Prologue

The 15th century. Into Dracula's castle.
Downstairs, Young Dracula celebrate with his court (Renfield the jester, the 3 vamps and other dancers).

Young Dracula (speaking - raising his glasss):

To the end of our alliance with the Ottomans!
No matter what the consequences should be!

Everyone raises his glass. The music begins for the BALLET, everyone chooses a partner to dance.
Lights changes : upstairs appears the shadow of a man sitting on his throne (old Dracula of the 19th century). Old Dracula sings without moving as a voice-over, while downstairs we see what happened then.

A Lord - Old and Young Dracula - The Soldiers (extract)

Old Dracula:

I was a king in those days,
I was a lord in that kingdom,
I was a lord in this country,
A powerful, respected lord,
A fearsome respected lord.

The day I met you my love
You made the dragon become a dove,
You made me become your Sweet Lord,
Always respected but beloved,
A truly respected lord.

I lost my life on that day,
When they invaded my kingdom,
When they demolished my castle,
Driven by hate, by jealousy,
They took everything I had.

I saw my towers collapsed,
And so did I, so stupefied.
I thought my people in safety.
I thought I could protect it from
Attacks from my enemies.

The Beginning Of The ACT I

Some villagers are working on the fields or sitting near the trees. Jonathan enters the stage, in his shirtsleeves, his waistcoat unbuttoned, the tie untied, his travel bag in one hand, his jacket on his arm and his hat in the other he fans himself with it.

Short musical introduction. The villagers see Jonathan coming on stage and signal him to approach.

Welcome - Villagers, Jonathan Harker (extract)

The men of the village:
Welcome here! Welcome here Sir, in our country!
Welcome here young man, welcome here...
And don’t be afraid...
Welcome here young man, in our land…

Jonathan puts down his bag on the ground to wipe his forehead and hands with his handkerchief before shaking hands. Other villagers enter and join in.

The women of the village:
Welcome here! Welcome here! Welcome here!
Welcome here to you, welcome here, welcome here...
Dear stranger…
Welcome here to you, dear stranger...

Jonathan (nodding):
My name is Jonathan
I am coming from England.
I am solicitor,
Not here as a visitor…

All villagers:
Welcome here! Welcome here!
Welcome here Jonathan!

Jonathan:
What hospitality...
You are so kind with me…
Your reception warms my heart
Feeling so bad,
To have left my sweetheart
Feeling so sad,
My dear Mina,
Stayed with her pupils
There in April…

The End of The Act 1

Light higher on Van Helsing getting up. He folds his newspaper and put it on the desk, welcomes Arthur and Dr. Seward (into mourning costumes) and shows them to take a sit.
Renfield hides himself in the set to listen to them.
Night is falling, lights change, “shadows” (dancers and choir) slowly invade the office without being seen by the three men.

Irrational - Professor Van Helsing, Lord Arthur, Dr. Seward, the Ensemble (extract)

Van Helsing: I have serious things to share with you...

Arthur: We are both ready…

Dr. Seward:…to listen to you.

Van Helsing: My dear Arthur,

Arthur: My dear Professor…

Van Helsing: I have to tell you,

Arthur: Tell me anything.

Van Helsing: I recognize you as a son,

Arthur: It is for me a great honor.

Van Helsing: Now listen...
We have to go back to her tomb...

Arthur: You are speaking of Lucy?!

Dr. Seward: Back to the cemetery?!

Arthur: It is too soon for me! (to Van Helsing)

Dr. Seward: Why this foolish fantasy?

Van Helsing: We have to plant a stake in her heart...

Arthur: Are you mad?

Van Helsing: So that she could die,

Dr. Seward: But she is already!

Arthur: You mean Lucy is alive?!

Dr. Seward: What stupidity!

Van Helsing: Please stop and listen to me!

The Beginning of the ACT II

The curtains open on a white snow set during a cloudy moonlight night in the cemetery of Whitby with few old tombstones inclined, few trees and Lucy’s tomb.

The Cemetery Visit - Renfield, Shadows (extract)

Introduction of the music 'The Cemetery Visit'.

Strange shadows overrun the place. Light on Renfield.

Renfield: (worrying)
The moon danced with the shadows...
That the wind and the clouds moved faster at...each blow!
All the graves of the cemetery
were shining so brightly
Cypresses in the wind...

Renfield (funny crazy) + Shadows:
...Were waving, rustling and singing so sadly that everything around was shivering!

Renfield: (sadistic)
From fear or from the cold but their teeth were chattering...

Shadows:
From fear or from the cold but their teeth were chattering...

Renfield: (funny crazy)
From fear or from the cold but for sure their teeth were chattering!

Near The End...

The Race Against Time

Musical introduction of Race against time begins.

Upstairs, light on Mina standing near her bed where her travelling clothes are waiting for her (a coat, gloves, ankle boots) and her luggage is on the floor. She is finishing to put her clothes on, looking happy and impatient. Once she is ready, she goes downstairs as a white fog invades the stage : She is like in the middle of nowhere.

Mina seems very happy and familiar to see this white fog. She looks impatient and prepares herself as if she was waiting for her lover and didn't know from where he will come.

Dracula appears, she throws herself in his arms as lovers happy to meet after a long time, they talk together, laught and dance with joy, singing...

Dracula:
The race against time is now beginning
I will soon have with you my happy ending.
You are in my power, my only weakness,
You have fulfilled my dark heart with happiness…

I have spent too much years to live without…living!
And too much time to brood over without…loving!
Everything has changed ! You’re back to my land!

Mina: (taking distance from him with joy)
The race against time is now beginning…
I will soon find again my cherish liberty
I do not want to live in sin for eternity
This curse that brings us together must have its ending.
And this other way...
Will be the good way!

Dracula: Not that! No, not that!
